Before any tool can reply to your Instagram comments, Instagram itself has to allow it. There are two requirements and one very common misunderstanding, and all three are worth knowing before you choose a tool — none of this is specific to us.
If you take one thing from this page: the second requirement is a single toggle in the Instagram app, and it is the reason most correctly-built automations never send a thing.
1. You need a Professional account
Instagram has three kinds of account.
Personal is the default. It cannot be automated at all — no tool, no workaround. Instagram simply does not expose the necessary access for personal accounts.
Creator is for individuals with an audience: coaches, artists, influencers, practitioners posting under their own name.
Business is for companies and organisations.
Creator and Business together are called Professional accounts, and either one works for comment automation, with one threshold:
- Up to 500,000 followers — Creator or Business, your choice
- Above 500,000 followers — Business
For most people reading this, either works and the choice comes down to which describes you.
Switching is less dramatic than it sounds
This is where people hesitate, so: switching to a Professional account is free, takes under a minute in the Instagram app, and does not delete your posts, your followers, or your history. You can switch back.
What actually changes:
- You get insights — reach, engagement, follower activity
- You can add contact buttons and a category label to your profile
- Your account becomes eligible for the API access that automation needs
The one thing to know: a Professional account cannot be private. If your account is currently private, making it Professional makes it public. For a business that is the point. If you were relying on being private, this is the real decision, not the account type itself.
You will find the option in the Instagram app under your profile settings, listed as switching to a professional account. Instagram moves the exact path around between versions, so search their help centre for “switch to a professional account” if it is not where you expect.
2. You have to let tools see your messages
This is the one. It is a single toggle, it is off by default for many accounts, and when it is off nothing happens at all — no error, no warning, no message. The automation runs, finds it cannot send, and stops.
In the Instagram app:
Settings and activity → Messages and story replies → Message controls → Connected tools → Allow access to messages
Turn it on.
Two things worth knowing about it. No tool can turn it on for you — not us, not anyone; Instagram deliberately reserves it for the account owner. And it can switch itself off again: app updates have been known to reset it, and anyone with access to the account can turn it off without realising what it does.
So if your comment automation has been working and suddenly stops, this is the first thing to check, not the last.
3. What you do not need
Plenty of guidance published before mid-2024 says you must connect a Facebook Page to your Instagram account, link it to a Business Manager, and assign a “handover protocol primary receiver” role.
You do not need any of that with Omni Octo. We connect through Instagram Business Login, which authenticates against your Instagram account directly. There is no Facebook Page to create, no Page to link, and no handover setting to configure.
This is not a small difference in practice. Facebook Page linkage is where a large share of Instagram automation support problems come from — a Page disconnected, a permission dropped, a role reassigned, and the automation stops for reasons that have nothing to do with Instagram. Tools built on the older connection still carry that surface. If you are comparing options and one of them asks you to set up a Facebook Page, that is why.
You also do not need to be verified, to have a minimum follower count, or to have a business registered anywhere.
The checklist
Before connecting Instagram to any comment automation tool:
- Account is Professional — Creator or Business (Business if above 500k followers)
- Allow access to messages is on — Settings and activity → Messages and story replies → Message controls → Connected tools
- That is genuinely all
If both are true and comment automation still does nothing, the cause is somewhere else — we wrote up the full list, ordered by how often each one is actually the problem.
What happens next
Once those are in place, the shape of what you can build is narrower than most marketing suggests, and it is worth understanding before you design a campaign around it: Instagram allows one automated public reply and one private DM per comment, and everything after that depends on the person answering you.
That constraint drives every real design decision, and we covered it in the rules that actually bind.
